Sunday 5th July 2009

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus said to them: “A prophet is only despised in his own country among his own relations and in his own house”. One of the mistakes we easily and often make is to think that what we see is all there is to see; what we know is all that there is to know. We do this about ourselves as well as about those close to us. There is always so much more to know about ourselves and certainly about each other. In marriage and family life, for example, we need to constantly look for and acknowledge the goodness that is there and set it free. Our homes should be places of praise instead of criticism as is so often the case. The same is true in a parish community. There is so much richness in every parish that never gets a chance to come to the surface. This is a week for letting that happen.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

14th Sunday of the Year

First Reading Ezekiel 2: 2-5
Ezekiel’s mission is to people who have turned against God. They do not want to listen to what he says, but he reminds them that his words are the words of the Lord.

Second Reading 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10
I shall be very happy to make my weaknesses my special boast so that the power of Christ may stay over me.

Gospel Mark 6: 1-6
Jesus is amazed at the lack of faith in those who would not accept him.

Month’s Mind Mass

The Month’s Mind Mass for the late
Agnes Devine, Hollyhill Road will be said in St. Joseph’s Church, Glenmornan on Friday 10th July at 8.00pm.

Music at Mass

As you know, our choirs have begun their summer break, so we think that there should be some congregational singing during our Masses over the next two months. We have included the words of this weekend’s hymns.

Entrance Hymn

Sweet Heart Of Jesus

Sweet heart of Jesus, fount of love and mercy.
Today we come, thy blessing to implore;
O touch our hearts, so cold and so ungrateful,
And make them, Lord, thine own for evermore.
Sweet heart of Jesus, we implore,
O make us love thee more and more.

Recessional Hymn

Hail Queen Of Heaven

Hail, Queen of heav’n, the ocean star,
Guide of the wand’rer here below:
Thrown on life’s surge, we claim thy care:
Save us from peril and from woe.
Mother of Christ, star of the sea,
Pray for the wand’rer, pray for me.

O gentle, chaste and spotless maid,
We sinners make our prayers through thee:
Remind thy Son that he has paid
The price of our iniquity.
Virgin most pure, star of the sea,
Pray for the sinner, pray for me.

Am I Religious?

‘I’m not very religious, Father,’ she/he says – meaning that the local church is entered only a once a week. If so, it’s an unfair verdict. A religious personis one who senses something of the majesty of God and is stirred by it to know one’s littleness; who glimpses the grandeur of God in a sunset or in a swallow in flight or in a daisy in bloom; and knows the nearness of God in a whispering breeze, or in a tear or a stream; who respects the dignity of the young and of the old, and values the hopes of the heart above the usefulness of the hands; who pays fairly, honours debts and keeps the word of promises; who gives so that others may have life, and forgives so that oneself may live at peace and in joy; who treasures compassion and spends it at will; who crowns the prayers of each day with worship on Sunday, and matches them both with the weekdays’ good works.

The next Pioneer Meeting will take place on Monday at 8.00pm, followed by a meeting of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
