15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“So they set off to preach repentance.” There are many strange contradictions in our world today. One of them is that so many of us have lost a sense of sin and yet the power of evil was never so obvious. Maybe this is a reaction to the past where sin seemed to be in everything. One of the major sins for most of us is in settling for so little when so much is on offer. This happens when a couple settles for mediocrity rather than a sense of adventure in their marriage; when a family settles for coexistence rather than love; when a parish settles for duty rather than building a real faith community. We may not be able to do a lot about the general evil that is in the world. We can do a lot about our own setting of limits and this in turn will affect the world we live in.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Entrance Hymn

Sweet Heart Of Jesus

Sweet heart of Jesus, fount of love and mercy.
Today we come, thy blessing to implore;
O touch our hearts, so cold and so ungrateful,
And make them, Lord, thine own for evermore.
Sweet heart of Jesus, we implore,
O make us love thee more and more.

Recessional Hymn

Hail Queen Of Heaven

Hail, Queen of heav’n, the ocean star,
Guide of the wand’rer here below:
Thrown on life’s surge, we claim thy care:
Save us from peril and from woe.
Mother of Christ, star of the sea,
Pray for the wand’rer, pray for me.

O gentle, chaste and spotless maid,
We sinners make our prayers through thee:
Remind thy Son that he has paid
The price of our iniquity.
Virgin most pure, star of the sea,
Pray for the sinner, pray for me.

Thieves at work again!

We understand that there have been a number a thefts and burglaries in our area in recent weeks. We are strongly advised not to make it easy for the thieves by leaving doors unlocked and windows open, especially when we are away from home.

Once again we should make sure that we take all the necessary precautions in order to prevent thieves from breaking into our cars. We shouldn’t leave anything of any value inside our vehicles. Let’s all have a safe, secure and happy summer!

Keeping It Simple

Who travels lightest, travels furthest is a trusim. What seemed essential at the journey’s beginning is discarded as soon as the shoulder straps on our rucksack begin to chafe. The general rule for packing is to lay out everything you need and take away half of it. Think light and adaptable!

It’s a truth that experienced walkers will verify. Among them the growing number of pilgrims walking the ancient Camino or pilgrimage way to the shrine of St. James at Santiago de Cospostella in Spain. They find that a long hard look at what you’re packing pays off. The joy of knowing you packed blister plasters is indescribable when needed. Maybe as we pack for a family holiday, we need to take a good look at what we are bringing with us along the road of life?

So, in our lives, what needs to be scrutinised and discrded? What has stood us in good stead when the chips are down? Decluttering is not just about household possessions, but also about attitudes and values that are unworthy of the name of Christian.

Last week’s Collection was £1,454.00. Many thanks.
