‘There’s More To Life Than Fish’

The call of the sons of Zebedee is a classic example of how God tends to interrupt the most ordinary of lives. James and John were immersed in a way of life passed down to them from generation to generation. They grew up knowing they would become fishermen like their father and grandfather before them. The world of boats, nets and fish was their comfort zone, their security, their place of belonging; it was the legacy they would pass onto their children, and to their children’s children. They never dreamed of a different lifestyle nor had lofty visions of an alternative future. Instead, they did what had to be done.

Jesus’ invitation awakened the brothers from habit, starting with the possibility that there was an existence beyond the boat. For the first time, perhaps, they realised there was more to life than fish, that there were ideas beyond those they had learned in their parents’ home. As their eyes and hearts opened, James and John responded fully, leaving everything without even a good-bye.

Startle us, O Lord, with a new vision, that we may serve you alone.

Last week’s Collection was £1,913.00. Many thanks.
